You can run many open-source Linux applications, some of which do not crash. Without those drivers your tablet really doesn't do much.
That means that things like the wifi chip, integrated gpu, touch screen, etc probably don't have any open source drivers. This is because a lot of mobile hardware is proprietary and specifications for the hardware are only available under NDA.
Even if you did manage to install Linux most of the time the drivers for your tablet don't exist.
You can usually bypass this, but sometimes it requires rooting the device, or doctoring the firmware image to look like the manufacturer's image.
